ITALY SERIES 2

Corinthian continued it's partnership with Giochi Preziosi and released MicroStars Italy Series 2, with this series also being done in conjunction with the iconic Italian newspaper 'La Gazzetta dello Sport'

Those who watched Football Italia on Channel 4 presented by James Richardson will have fond memories of the Pink newspaper that is La Gazzetta dello Sport, it always threw up some interesting and often peculiar headlines.

A slightly smaller series, with it consisting of 32 figures, 24 of which were from the active Serie A 2006/07 season, the remaining 8 were legend figures! These Legend figures were a huge hit and have always remained in high demand amongst collector's, not surprising when you read the line up.​

​

Roberto Baggio is in Brescia home kit, Dieog Maradona in the home kit of his beloved Napoli, George Weah and Dejan Savicevic are in AC Milan home kits, this is the only ever MicroStars release of Weah and is the most coveted of all Series 2 figures.

Michel Platini is in Juventus home kit, joined by Zinedine Zidane in Juventus home kit, this is the only MicroStars release of Zizou in a Juventus kit, the other releases have him in France national kits. The final 2 are in Inter Milan home kit, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Giuseppe Bergomi, this is the only MicroStars version of Bergomi in Inter Milan home kit, the one from Japan Miniatures Series 10 has him in away kit.

The figures were once again released in single mystery boxes, the same style as the ones used for the Italy Series 1. Each mystery box contained one randomly packed MicroStars figure, which could be on one of the seven base colours, which are Green, Red, Blue, White, Silver, Gold and Black.

A FANBUK also came issued with the figures which contained a profile on each player and also detailed those available in the series, with the text being in Italian. The boxes were released inside a CDU (Counter Display Unit) with 16 boxes per CDU, with the distributor for the series being Giochi Preziosi.

I have always been a huge fan of this series as it had everything a collector wanted, the packaging was distinct and bore the Pink to associate itself with La Gazzetta dello Sport, all figures were from Italy's Serie A and unique to the series (only exception was Kaka who was released in Sweden Series 17 and as part of the 2008 Convention Special set.) A nice mix of top stars from the top clubs, along with emerging talent from the smaller clubs, and of course the 8 legends figures, one of which is the superb George Weah sculpt!
